Noah's ark

The exhibition opens on 25 January at 16:00 in the exhibition halls of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

One of my works will be shown — “I will never lose myself again”, from the Totem series, portraying Yuliia Cherniaieva, an active member of the animal-welfare movement in Cherkasy.

Animal art is one of the oldest genres there is. Stylised figures of beasts and birds already appear in the art of the prehistoric world. Images of real and mythical animals reach an unmatched vitality and monumentality in the art of the Ancient East, in the “animal style” of Europe and Asia — among the Scythians, Sakas and Sarmatians — and in the art of antiquity and Hellenism. The European genre took shape in the 17th century. In the 18th, portraits of four-legged household favourites became popular. In the 19th, not only domestic animals but wild ones entered easel compositions, battle scenes and hunting subjects. In the 20th, artists of every movement used the images of beasts and birds: animals became the subjects of urban and rural landscapes, of dramatic hunts, of domestic scenes and of battle paintings.
